It took awhile for GCV 2009 to arrive in DC. The show actually will take place in VA this Saturday, 4-4-09. The address is below. Anyone is coming to see it? I will be there to check it out and support VA contestants.

I believe Danghaonam was asking about it. It looks like he didn't make the list. Take some more singing lessons and try again next time buddy [:)].
After all my GCV complains in the previous post, SBTN TV finally aired GCV show in Indiana on SBTN TV. BTC should also air/rerun taping of previous shows.

Instead, I kept seeing rerun of Dieu Quyen (Truc Ho's wife), who received the Person of the year award(corrected, not woman). Did you know that? I wonder if there's a BGK in ASIA for that as well to pick Dieu Quyen, who might be unknown among many other talented Vietnamese women/men and submit her to California officials. Sometimes, they just submit names or giving out titles without any recommendations or acknowledgement among the wider Vietnamese communities in the US.

TruthHurts, I don't think there was a competition for that...[:)] and I don't know how Dieu Quyen got chosen either. Any case, congrats to her and Truc Ho.

Well, I am sure there are sweet, nice, beautiful Viet Women and even great Viet Men out there just like Dieu Quyen. Many of them just happen not to be seen in the public and sport light like Dieu Quyen. But being nice is not good enough to earn the award of Person of The Year.
This is not a small award, it's for someone who has done lots of volunteer work, sacrifices and achieve good things. To get it just because you're a math teacher and an anker news reporter. That's not enough, and she got that job cause of her husband (Truc Ho).

I don't know much about chi Dieu Quyen (?). However, based on the evidence available to me (i.e her good community involvement & charity work to help the poor both in the US and in VN). I agree that she deserves to be selected for the "Honourable Title".

Beside that, as far as I am concerned there are many young Vietnamese girls who excel in their studies and who are in high positions within the US Universities and engineering & medical fields. I personally believe that these young talented Vietnamese deserve that "Honourable Title" too !

Do you understand what politics is? There's nothing politics in what I wrote. Everything is within ASIA and SBTN boundary. Requested to see more GCV on SBTN, instead saw other rerun shows that worth commented on.


I did not mean you, Truthhurts. I refer to Nomilktoday's comments when he started talking about VC v.v...

Ok here were the all-male winners from DC event:

1. Khong Bao Vy - VA (nhac thi'nh pho`ng)
2. Nguyen Thanh An - MA (nhac xe^'n)
3. Forgot his name - VA (nhac li'nh)

Among the 14 contestants, 10 of them sang really well but Bao Vy clearly came on top with his unique voice and a mix of Nguyen Khang and Tuan Ngoc. I wasn't too pleased with judges' choice for 2nd and third. Others were better choices. I think if one just sings ok with either nhac xen hay nhac li'nh, they will get a prize in this competition.

I came to support Thu Huyen, she sang well "Uoc Gi" (original music arrangement), unfortunately she didn't please the judges enough. I think she's the best female performing that evening though. I hope other productions/Trung Tam (Thuy Nga, Van Son, Tinh, May etc...) will pick her as one of their singers.

One thing happened that reminds me of a topic that TruthHurts brought up about Bac and Nam singers. Thu Huyen originally came from Hai Phong, her accent is a bit slightly heavier than Hong Nhung. As soon as Thu Huyen started to greet the judges and audience, there was a very strange noise of reaction came from the crowd. It was obviously a strange welcome. I would say more than 50% of the audience were 50 and above. (DC is famous for being "chi'nh tri." area).

Also, I found this a bit unfair. Khai Do (VA) sang one of Dam Vinh Hu*ng's song. His style of singing and performance is very similar to DVH. The judge told him that him that he should sing his own style and not copying someone else. In Bao Vy's case (first prize winner), the judges had no problem with Vy's singing similar to Tuan Ngoc and Nguyen Khang. I guess it's ok to sing similar to Hai Ngoai singer and not the ones from Vietnam??? MC Thuy Duong jumped in and said something that really made sense, that all amateur singers often found inspiration to sing similar to their idol singers first and eventually he or she will find his/her own style.

I got video clips of the event and will see if I can upload on youtube later. SBTN TV should have the show aired this week or by the weekend.

TT Asia is mostly about nha.c li'nh, so there's no doubt about that. Yup, nhac xe^'n or even Cai luong will do well in a Viet competition. Sing well enough or not, it doesn't matter. Dang The luan la cai example nay.

TruthHurts, most Viet people in the U.S came from the south (mieng Tay), so xe^'n is their choice. That night, there were much applauses whenever a contestant sang nha.c xen. If you let people vote for GCV, they will pick a nhac xen singer.

I do see some ky` thi. among the Viet singers in the U.S toward those from Vietnam, especially cause of the fee. It costs 5-10 thousands dollars plus ticket/hotel to book Dam Vinh Hu*ng from VN, but only 1.5 to 3 thousands for one in the U.S. I don't know if ASIA ever invited a singer from VN to be in their show.

One more thing, one of the female contestants complained on the stage that night that she didn't know about making the list until 3 days before the event, when she received a phone call from BTC. Since she had not internet access and didn't receive any letter. The judge was being so cold saying that, it doesn't matter if she had known about it early in advance, cause she didn't sing well enough. Her song choice was one of the songs in Vietnam that My Tam (currently in VN) had sang. I thought she sang very similar to My Tam also. Those who didn't make it, were all suggested by Truc Ho to sing more cho "Cong Dong" roi vai nam sau di thi lai.

I hope that's not how BGK evaluate the contestants based on where the song was written, sang by who and its writer. Thu Huyen and others who didn't make it, are truely singers. To become a singer they don't need to compete for this. They will have to find other means to be recognized and luckly got promoted by other Trung Tam/productions.

Over all, DC competition was a very competitive one. BGK admitted that DC "ba'n ket" had more talented contestants than any other GCV2009 events so far. Truc Ho already guaranteed that 2 of the wining contestants (first and second)from DC will make the final in CA. With only 10 thi'sinh will be chosen among the about 10 locations in the U.S, I wonder who will be the other 8's. Like BGK had mentioned, I guess not all first prized winners will make the final. Winners from Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal will be additional to 10 U.S winners.

My pick to win GCV2009 final in CA will be Kho^ng Ba?o Vy~ (first prize winner) from VA. This guy can really sing with a voice combination of Tuan Ngoc, Nguyen Khang and Quang Dung added with mot chat giong ky la. Truc Ho said this "la."/uniqueness is very good la. that he had never heard before. Vy~ looks more confident than Nguyen Khang and sang with soul/feeling. I believe the confidence came from his background of Karate.

Keep eyes on this guy.

U'a ua, contestants you better watch out and let Vy~ win!!! otherwise he will karate chop you.

I wish that BTC would post contestants' demo songs for us to hear on their website and that SBTN would air all the shows so we at least can have an idea of who to pick. At this time I can't guess who.

Ban co gang doi, minh phai edit/change cai file roi se upload. Thu Huyen hat "Uoc gi" original hay va nghe ro ho*n cai remix version.
Day la cuoc thi giong ca, co rat nhieu thi sinh hat rat hay, nen rat kho'. Thu Huyen cu~ng da co nhung yeu to de tro tha`nh 1 ca si. Cuoc thi nay kho^ng chi? la` 1 cach duy nhat de becoming a singer.
